This hardy and adaptable clematis was introduced to the U.S. in the 1850s and no clematis has ever proved to be more popular. Its large, dark purple flowers measure 5″ across and in midsummer they completely cover the vine in a carpet of color. Clematis jackmanii is a strong grower, yet it won’t overwhelm a small space.
